Balancing International and National Education for Cambodian Children

The story of Cambodian children struggling to connect with their grandparents underscores the importance of balancing global aspirations with cultural roots.
Recently, I met a man who shared a story that left a deep impression on me. He spoke about families living in a province of Cambodia who sent their children to study at international schools in Phnom Penh. These parents had high hopes for their children’s future, investing heavily in a global education. However, each time their children returned to visit their hometown, something unexpected happened — the children struggled to communicate with their own relatives. They could no longer speak Khmer fluently, making it difficult to talk with their grandparents and older family members who did not understand English.
This story made me reflect deeply. I realized that while giving our children access to an international education opens doors to global opportunities, it is equally important that they remain rooted in their own culture, language, and identity. Communication is not just about words; it’s about connection, respect, and belonging.
That’s why I have chosen a different path for my children. I decided to let them study both the International Program and the National Program by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport. Through the International Program, they gain critical thinking skills, creativity, and the ability to compete on a global stage. Through the National Program, they learn the Khmer language properly, understand our history, and stay connected to our traditions and values.
For me, it is not an either/or decision. It is about giving them both wings and roots — the wings to fly far into the world, and the roots to remember where they come from. I believe this balanced approach will make them not only successful individuals, but also proud Cambodians who can honor their families and heritage.
